I’ve been keeping the light on Puffin Island for eleven years now. It’s a solitary job, but I chose it. I needed the quiet after thirty years of teaching high school English to teenagers who would rather stare at their phones than at me. The island is a two-hour boat ride from the mainland, and the only other living things here are the gulls, the seals, and, for the last three weeks, a stray tabby cat that I’ve taken to calling "Compass."

The routine is simple. I wake at dawn, check the diesel generator, polish the massive Fresnel lens, and log the weather. At dusk, I climb the spiral stairs to the lantern room and flip the switch. The beam sweeps the Atlantic in a slow, hypnotic arc. It’s a rhythm that hums in your bones. But last Tuesday, that rhythm was shattered by a sound I hadn't heard in a decade: my phone buzzing with a text message.

It was from my former colleague, Sarah. She said she was in trouble, she was scared, and she needed to talk. She wasn’t asking for a rescue boat or the coast guard. She said she needed my advice. I stared at the screen, the blue light illuminating my small kitchen. Sarah was the last person I expected to hear from. She was the most grounded person I knew, a math teacher with a spreadsheets-for-everything mentality.

My hand hovered over the call button, but I knew the connection here was spotty at best. The only reliable signal came from the old satellite dish on the north side of the roof, but it was finicky. I climbed up there, the cold wind biting at my ears, and pointed it at a specific angle. It took twenty minutes, but I got a single bar. I called her back.

Her voice was shaky. She told me she was dealing with a custody battle over her nephew, a kid she'd raised since he was a baby. The father, her brother, had just gotten out of a bad stint in rehab and was suing for full custody. He was clean now, but Sarah was terrified he’d relapse. She was lying awake every night, staring at the ceiling, her mind racing through every possible scenario. She wasn’t sleeping, she wasn’t eating, and she was losing her grip.

I listened to her ramble for twenty minutes, the static crackling between us. I felt so helpless, this old man on a rock in the middle of the ocean. I couldn’t fix her brother. I couldn’t fix the court system. But I could tell her the one thing that had helped me get through my own dark nights when I first came to the island.

"I'll tell you a secret, Sarah," I said, my voice low. "When I first got here, the silence was deafening. It wasn't peaceful; it was loud. My brain wouldn't shut off. So, I started doing something to quiet the noise. I found a place where the only thing that mattered was the next spin, the next moment of chance. It was a way to stop obsessing over the past. I used to play on this site, https://mobile-slots.online/https://mobile-slots.online/ that offered the best online slots with these crazy, immersive themes. It sounds silly, but for fifteen minutes a night, I wasn't a lonely man on an island; I was an explorer in a jungle or a detective in a noir film. It was the only thing that gave my brain a vacation."

I paused, hearing her breathing slow down a little on the other end. I could picture her in her apartment, surrounded by legal documents.

"It wasn't about the money," I continued. "It was about the focus. The bright lights and the sound effects—it’s like a video slot machine you take with you. It’s designed to be all-consuming, a little dose of Vegas slots right on your phone. I found that after twenty minutes of that, the anxiety was gone. The thoughts were still there, but they were smaller, less sharp. It didn't solve the problem, but it gave me the energy to deal with the problem the next morning."

I heard her sigh. "I don't know, Mark. That seems so... random."

"Life is random, Sarah. The only thing we control is how we cope in between the random events. I’m not saying it’s a cure. I’m saying it’s a bandage. Sometimes you need a bandage just to get through the night."

We talked for another half an hour, mostly about nothing—the weather, how the gulls were getting bolder, how Compass the cat had learned to open the pantry door. Just the mundane stuff of life. When we hung up, I felt a little lighter. I think she did too.

That night, as I climbed the spiral stairs to light the lantern, I realized something. The light isn't just for the ships out at sea. It’s a beacon for the person who turns it on, too. It gives him a purpose. Sarah was fighting her own storm, and maybe, just maybe, I was able to point her toward a temporary harbor.

I haven't heard from her since, but I don't need to. A few days ago, I saw a photo on social media—she was at a park, pushing her nephew on a swing, laughing. She looked tired, but she looked free. I closed my laptop and smiled. The silence on the island didn't feel so lonely anymore. It felt like a quiet, steady hum of hope. I guess all we can do is find our own signal, even if it's just a flicker in the dark. The light on the horizon is always there, you just have to be willing to look for it.
